Academic Head of Department – Oman

Chase Resourcing are delighted to announce that we are recruiting Academic Head of Department to work across the Aeronautical Engineering Department for a major client of ours in Oman.

Our client is seeking to appoint an aspired professional to  assume responsibility for the overall quality, content, development and delivery of academic and vocational training programmes offered by the Department and to support engagement in applied research and scholarly activity relating to aeronautical engineering. The candidate must be a graduate engineer possessing higher engineering qualifications at minimum master degree level. The candidate should preferably have applied career experience in aeronautical engineering, be a professionally registered engineer and member of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) or equivalent learned institution. Proven people leadership and management skills is an essential requirement.

Key Responsibilities of the Academic Head of Department include:

• To provide strategic leadership of the Department
• To take responsibility for setting and advancing its strategic direction, in collaboration with the Dean of the College and Senior Academic Colleagues.
• To provide direct line management for the Department staff and overall leadership and responsibility for all Department staff
• To establish a performance culture across the Department.
• To build research strengths to establish a strong stream of internationally-competitive research outputs, grow external research income including from prestigious sources, increase PhD registrations.
• Contribute to research in an appropriate subject area, including research publications.

Duties of the Academic Head of Department include:

• To develop and regularly review strategic plans.
• To develop and enhance the research culture of the Department, seeking interdisciplinary collaboration across the new and existing staff.
• To carry out research and produce publications, or other research outputs.
• Mentor department staff on the development of their academic activities.
• To ensure effective practices for staff recruitment, induction, management and development are in place and are used effectively, including: planned recruitment campaigns, probation, appraisal schemes, research sabbaticals and mentoring. In particular, staff development to achieve the highest standards in teaching and research should be supported.
• Ensure full optimization of academic staff in the Department, including: the effective allocation of duties, performance management.
• Develop and maintain effective workforce plans. This includes: the provision of flexible and effective technical support for both teaching and research; the effective deployment of academic staff including balancing of academic duties; the role of researchers, technicians and teaching assistants in the life of the Department.
• To manage the Department budget; ensure that equipment and facilities are appropriate and well maintained.

Requirements of Academic Head of Department:

• A minimum of 15 years’ experience in managing academic programmes with 5 years in a leadership management position.
• PhD is preferential. MSc is essential.
• Chartered Engineer example in (CEng / IEng) or similar institution internationally accredited.
• Knowledge of vocational programmes offered by the department.
• Experience of leading and managing teams.
• Track record in scientific research preferable.
• HEA fellowship or equivalent fellowship internationally accredited (added advantage).
