Leading and managing the day to day operations of the laboratory ensuring samples are processed accurately, promptly and efficiently for required chemical and environmental testing while maintaining high standards of compliance with Health and Safety, Quality System and Customer requirements. To provide excellent customer service through accurate and timely reporting of results and response to customer queries. To provide leadership, training, supervision and support to team by proactive and effective planning of workload and resources. To proactively assist management with technical and operational development of the department
The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the day to day management of the laboratories – Dairy + Food Chemistry + Environmental Departments, managing a team of 20 qualified scientists, and for implementing company policies and instructions and in particular:
Full responsibility for the operation of the laboratory; the quality of the testing provided, the safe maintenance of the equipment and the well-being of the staff.
Proactively manage operations to meet customer’s requirements by effective planning and day to day management of workflow and testing.
Ensure comprehensive procedures are implemented for thorough contract review of all work received and ensure effective and efficient allocation of work on a daily basis to meet business and customer requirements.
Implementing quality system requirements in all areas of work including ensuring amendments to the Quality Manual or other QA documentation are promptly initiated and implemented as instructed.
Perform testing as required to ensure customer and operational needs are met.
Ensure that quality systems are adhered to and INAB accreditation is maintained and expanded by developing and optimising technical capabilities and new techniques / methods.
Plan and lead development projects on method performance, validation and quality control systems.
Provide supervision, training and guidance to staff. Develop and participate in training programmes, undergo further training as required and participate in schemes to ensure on-going competence and development of skills.
Ensure that laboratory resources – equipment, materials and staff – are properly managed at all times.
Acting as an Authorised Signatory for Test Certificates, report all results in a format required by the customer, providing relevant technical support as appropriate.
Develop, monitor and improve lab KPIs on productivity, efficiency and service delivery to demonstrate effective management of Department.
Exercise a sound commercial and financial awareness to help reduce and control costs within the required budget.
Uphold client confidence in the accuracy and response of testing.
Maintain accurate and systematic records in accordance with documented procedures.
Possess good working knowledge of relevant documents within the Quality System including Test Methods, SOPs, Quality Manual, methods, EQA & IQC and client specific standards or specifications (where relevant).
Ensuring that the reported data is correct, that QC specifications and other requirements of the Quality Manual an of relevant accreditation body have been complied with in respect of the report issued.
Proactively investigate any faults or problems and, if not resolved, report findings to Management without delay.
Assisting with or perform periodic quality audits, maintenance of quality system, clearance of non-compliances, method development and validation projects, preparations for regulatory and customer audits / visits, as directed.
Ensuring that excellent standards of housekeeping and hygiene are maintained at all times according to stipulated procedures.
Ensuring that all assigned Laboratory and QA Schedules are actioned within the required timescale.
Proactively assist with and propose innovate solutions to support the ongoing technical and operational development of the department to ensure the consistent delivery of excellent standards of service to customers by operating the laboratory in the most professional, efficient and cost-effective manner while maintaining highest standards of quality and health and safety.
Work with senior management and staff to ensure that the best interests of the company and continual improvement of the quality systems are achieved.
Work as part of the part of the Cork management team to develop and exceed key performance indicators, deliver budget and growth strategy for the site
